This is how it works

Submitting proof of life

You have received an email from Zwitserleven asking you to confirm whether you are still alive and entitled to your pension income.

I understand that:

  • my face will be scanned and compared to my ID;
  • this verification is conducted by Entrust on behalf of Zwitserleven;
  • my biometric data will be used solely for this purpose and will be deleted afterward;
  • I am not required to give this consent and can provide proof of life in another way;
  • I can withdraw my consent at any time, without any impact on my pension payments.

Ready in just a few steps

To let us know that you are still alive, we use biometric identification. This means that the unique features of your face are measured, such as the size and distance of your eyes, mouth, nose, and ears. All you need is your ID and a smartphone/tablet or a laptop/PC with a camera.

  1. Grab your ID and your smartphone/tablet. Don’t have a smartphone/tablet? Then use a laptop/PC with a camera.
  2. Tick the checkbox to give consent for the processing of your biometric data.
  3. Click on ‘Start’.
  4. Follow the steps on the screen.
  5. You will receive a notification when everything is complete.

More information

Why do I need to provide proof of life?

We regularly review your information to ensure that you are alive and entitled to your pension income. In the event of death, we do not receive notifications from foreign institutions.

What is Entrust?

Entrust is a company specialized in identity verification. This company was previously known as Onfido. Entrust verifies the identity of our customers by comparing the photo on your ID with a selfie video you create. This ensures that it is really you.

Which identification document can I use?

You can use one of these valid and original documents:

  • a passport (from any country)
  • a driver’s license from the Netherlands or another EU country
  • an ID card from the Netherlands or another EU country
  • a Dutch residence permit
Is providing proof of life online safe?

Yes. The entire process takes place in a highly secure online environment. Your data is protected.

Can I also provide proof of life without a smartphone/tablet?

Yes, you can. First, take a photo of your identification document and save it on your laptop/PC. During the identification process, you will be asked to upload this photo. You can then create the selfie video using your laptop/PC camera. You will need to allow camera access when prompted.

Which personal data is processed?

During this process, the following data is processed:

  • Identification data: name, date of birth, nationality, document number, expiration date, etc.
  • Biometric data: the passport photo on the identification document and the selfie video (facial recognition).
  • Technical data: such as IP address, time of verification, browser or device used (for security purposes).
  • Status: result of the verification (successful, failed, manual review required).
On what legal basis does Zwitserleven process this data?

The processing is based on:

  • Article 6 part 1 under a GDPR: your consent, and
  • Article 9 part 2 under a GDPR: your explicit consent for the processing of biometric data.

You can withdraw your consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of the processing prior to withdrawal.

Where is the data processed?

For this process, we use our processor Entrust, based in the United Kingdom. Entrust may engage subprocessors in countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA), including the United States, India, and Sri Lanka. You can find an up-to-date overview of processing locations here: https://www.entrust.com/company/subprocessors, under 'All Entrust Identity Verification Services,' 'Document Check,' and 'Facial Similarity Check.' Where personal data is processed outside the EEA, we ensure appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission-approved standard contractual clauses.

What happens to my data?

Entrust uses your photos solely to verify your identity. They then securely transfer the data to Zwitserleven and delete all the information. Zwitserleven stores your data in accordance with the privacy statement. Unable to provide proof of life? In that case, we automatically delete your identification data. We do not retain it.

My camera isn’t working. What now?

Are you receiving a notification that the camera is not allowed? Then check your browser settings and grant permission to use the camera.

I have completed all the steps, what now?

Then you’re all set. You will see this on your screen. We are now reviewing your data.

  • Do we need anything else from you? We’ll let you know shortly.
  • Is everything correct? Then you’ll receive a confirmation by email within a few days.
I would prefer to provide proof of life in another way; is that possible?

It is. For example, with a form. Please visit zwitserleven.nl/buitenland.

I don’t want to provide proof of life; what happens now?

We are required to regularly verify your information to ensure that you are alive and entitled to your pension income. That is why we request proof of life. If you do not (yet) provide this, it means that after a few months we will stop paying out your pension income.
